Modern square dancing club begins new season

From Prairie Stars Square Dance Club

The Prairie Stars Square Dance Club of Miles City is set to start another season of dancing.  This club is made up of dancers from Forsyth to Terry, to Plevna, and of course, Miles City, who enjoy the fellowship and enjoyment of recreational square dancing, the modern way.
The new season for the Prairie Stars will start on Thursday, September 20,  with dances held at the 4-H building at the Eastern Montana Fairgrounds. New dancers, and dancers that may have square danced in the past but have been out of the activity for some time, are invited to come and be a part of the new dancer sessions from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.  The new dancer sessions are followed by the club dances from 8:00 to 9:30 p.m.   Don’t be left out.  For information, you may call 406-234-7384.

Modern Square Dancing is not difficult to learn. You don’t even need to know how to dance. Unlike other dancing, if you can walk, you can square dance.  As a dancer, you are one of eight people who will simply listen to the calls and follow the directions. It is the caller’s job to give the directions and assist in making the dance happen. It is helpful if you know how to smile, and that can be learned along with the various dance movements. Besides being easy to learn, square dancing is mentally and physically stimulating, it is non-competitive, fun, and is a way to meet new friends.
If you haven’t seen modern square dancing, you probably think of a few farm folks in an old barn doing some crazy dance to an old time band playing “Turkey in the Straw”.  Things have changed.  The music is varied and includes country, western, gospel, jazz, rock and roll, and pop.  The dance movements still include some of the old favorites but there are many newer movements that are designed to create interesting dance patterns and, most importantly, dancer enjoyment.
Square Dancing shares a common heritage with the automobile.  In fact Henry Ford pioneered them both.  Just as the motor vehicle has evolved over the years so has square dancing.  Comparing modern square dancing with old time square dancing is like comparing a modern luxury car with a Model T Ford.  That is why we call it “Modern Square Dancing.”
