World War II Veteran Dave Covert will be leaving Sunday from Billings Logan International Airport to take part in the Montana Big Sky Honor Flight. He will be accompanied for the two-day visit to Washington D.C. by grandson Lyle Onstad of Great Falls.
The Honor Flight program honors World War II veterans by giving them an opportunity to visit veteran memorial sites including the Lincoln, Vietnam and Korean, and WW II Memorial sites, along with Arlington National Cemetery and the FDR Memorial.
At a healthy 90-years of age, Covert, who served in the military from 1943 to 1946, says he expects the trip to be an exhausting one but is looking forward to the experience.
“I was kind of holding back,” Covert explained of taking part in the program. But after receiving a phone call from his grandson encouraging him to attend and offering to accompany him, Covert said he became more interested in the idea.
