Local herder leads lambs to shipping yards

Story and Photos by Tamara Choat
It's not a sight you see every day — even in Terry, Mont.
On Oct. 1, Les and Dan Thomason, ranchers from southwest of Terry, drove their sheep through town to the Prairie County Grazing District shipping yards to sort off and sell the lambs crop for the year.
The herd of 650 mixed breed ewes and about 1,000 lambs made the trek down Laundre Street, with the help of Les leading with a bucket of grain, Dan on horseback, and other helpers — both human and canine — pitching in.
The lambs were shipped to a feedlot in South Dakota and the ewes herded across the Yellowstone River to fall pasture on Wednesday morning.
