Maxine (Chapman) Svenvold, age 92, of Glendive, Montana, passed away on Friday, December 13, 2013 at the Glendive Medical Center Extended Care in Glendive. Visitation was held on Tuesday, January 7, 2014 at the Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home in Glendive. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at Zion Lutheran Church in Glendive with Pastor Avis Anderson officiating. Interment will be held in the Dawson Memorial Cemetery in Glendive.
Maxine was born on July 11, 1921 in Terry, Montana, a daughter of Lewis and Phyllis (Reynolds) Chapman. She was raised on a ranch located between Terry and Brockway, Montana attending school in Terry where she graduated from Terry High School with the class of 1939. Following graduation, Maxine moved to Billings, Montana where she attended Eastern Montana College and received her teaching certificate in 1941. She moved to Bloomfield, Montana after college and taught at Steffen School for two years.
While teaching in rural Bloomfield area she met Ronald J. Svenvold. they were later married in Miles City, Montana in 1943. After their marriage she stayed busy helping on the farm, raising their children and substitute teaching when needed. After Ronald's death in 1979, Maxine remained on the farm until the mid eighties when she moved to Glendive.
She enjoyed quilting, gardening, time spent with her friends in the Ladies Birthday Club, traveling and attending the cousins reunion joined by her family each year. She loved spending time with her family especially her grandchildren. Maxine was a volunteer at the Attic in Glendive. She was a member of the Deer Creek Lutheran Church; where she taught Sunday School, Zion Lutheran Church, and Zion Quilters. She was always involved in the Deer Creek Bazaar.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Paul Chapman and sister, Loraine Doyle.
Survivors include her children, Carolyn (Dennis) Melton of Atlanta, Georgia, James R. (Linda) Svenvold of Houston, Texas, Roger L. Svenvold of Atlanta, Doug Svenvold of Bloomfield, David A. (Mary) Svenvold of Glendive and Dean Svenvold of Glendive; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Marjorie Beecher of Spokane, Washington and Ruth Groen of Mitchell, South Dakota; brothers, Charles Chapman of California, Lee Chapman of Terry and Jerry Chapman of Miles City, Montana, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial are suggested to Zion Lutheran Church in Glendive.
