Roy D. Volkman, age 97, passed away July 8, 2014 in Marin General Hospital in San Rafael, California with family at his bedside. His death is attributed to the infirmities of age.
Roy was born July 25, 1916 and raised in Cotton-wood, Minnesota. He almost reached is 98th birthday. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War and received an honorable dis-charge. Roy worked in the molybdenum mines in Climax, Colorado from 1942 to 1945. He then studied telegraphy in Kansas and became a telegra-pher on the CMSTP and PRR arriving in Terry, Montana in 1946. He later was agent and operator in many small towns in Montana for the Milwaukee Railroad, Melstone, Roundup, Carterville, Mildred, Baker and back to Terry where he retired.
Roy’s hobbies were playing horseshoes, cards and fishing. During his 1st mar-riage to Florence, he became father of three daughters, Sha-ron, Lorene and Darlene. In his 2nd mar-riage to Sharon, they had two sons and two daugh-ters: Royce, Curtis, Doreen and Caroline.
Roy is survived by his chil-dren, 30 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren and 15 great, great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents: Francis and Her-man, sisters: Lois, Dorothy, Edith and Eunice and brothers: Donald, Harland, Hiram, a twin daughter Darlene, grand-daughters: Candi and Saman-tha and two great grandsons: Chad and Nathan.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 17, 2014 from 1:00-5:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 18, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will follow in the Eastern Montana State Veteran’s Cemetery with full military honors.
