By Coach Casey Schladweiler and Kay Braddock
Wind gusts of up to 60-miles per-hour met the Terry Terriers as they traveled to Denton, in what would turn out to be their final game of the season.
The second ranked Denton Trojans overtook the Terriers 58-26 in the first round of playoff action.
“We played a good game against a very good team,” head coach Casey Schladweiler stated. “We gave it our best shot.”
Terry’s season ended with a 5-3 record, with the team winning over Frazer and Lambert. A forfeit game against Roberts began the season.
“We are a young team,” Schladweiler stated, noting players continued to learn and improve each week of the season.
The loss of the two senior players will be felt in next year’s team, Schladweiler noted. Both Taylor Pisk and Tanner Stickel contributed offensively and defensively to the team’s efforts.
Play-by-play action of Saturday’s game against Denton follows:
Terry kicked off to begin the game and forced Denton to punt. Denton then stopped Terry and forced a punt. Denton then drove the field. Robert Todd scored from 3 yards out.
Tanner Stickel returned the kickoff 35 yards to give Terry good field position. Terry needed seven plays to score, with Jerett Freiboth finding Stickel for the 25 yard score.
Denton’s Brandon Bury caught a 26 yard pass from Jordan Lahr - then kicked the extra point to give Denton a 15-6 lead. Denton’s kickoff went into the end zone giving the Terriers the ball on the 15 yard line. After an incomplete pass on a first down, Weston Luedtke found a big hole created by the offensive line and ran 65 yards for the touchdown. At the end of the first quarter the score was Denton 15, Terry 12.
Terry was unable to get anything going offensively in the second quarter. Denton would score twice in that same time period, bringing the halftime score to Denton 29, Terry 12.
Denton forced Terry to punt to start the half. Denton then drove the field and scored on a 1 yard run by Jordan DeVries giving the Trojans a 36-12 lead. Terry returned with their own, on a 6 play 46 yard drive capped off by an 8 yard touchdown pass from Trevor Pisk to Luedtke.
Terry forced another punt that the head wind severely affected giving the Terriers the ball on the 25 yard line. Pisk found Stickel open for the score on the first play and after Freiboth’s kick extra point cut the Trojans lead to 36-26.
Momentum seemed to be going in the Terriers’ favor when Taylor Pisk blocked their punt, giving Terry the ball on the 18 yard line. But no points were achieved out of that possession.
Down only 10 points, Terry headed into the fourth quarter with a viable opportunity to catch up and win the game. Unfortunately the Terry gridders were unable to find the end zone, while Denton was able to score 22 fourth quarter points to seal their victory over the Terriers.
Tanner Stickel led the defense with 17 tackles followed by Trevor Pisk - 14, Taylor Pisk - 10, and DJ Hubbert - 9.
