Robert Hugh Johnson, 86

  Robert Hugh Johnson of Terry died Friday, April 30, 2010 at Fort Meade Hospice Care Center in Sturgis, SD from the many medical challenges he had battled over the past several years.

Robert was born on March 30, 1924 in Hasty, Ark. to John Wesley Johnson and Elizabeth Bowling Johnson Farris. In 1926, at the ago of two, along with his mother, two sisters, a brother, an aunt and uncle, four cousins and a hired man, in a Model T truck, they arrived in the Locate-Sutherland area. His uncle had traveled through the area and purchased the Sutherland post office. Robert remained in the area until 1928 when his mother married Loyd Farris and they moved to the Pine Hills area east of Miles City.
Robert stayed in the Locate, Terry, and Miles City area until he took a notion to be a cowboy. He rode with the “Cowboy Gang”, riding in rodeos, breaking horses and working on various ranches until he was inducted into the Army in 1945. After being discharged in 1946, he came back to the Terry area.
In his travels around the country he had stopped in Indiana and this is where he met his future wife, Ardeth Childers. They were married in Ismay, Mont. on Feb 26, 1955. To this union two children were born; Rocky Vern Johnson of Spearfish, SD and Judy Ellen (Stephen) Jeske of Bonners Ferry, ID. 
Robert worked for the Custer County Road Department from 1956 -1962. In 1963 he moved his family to a farm they had purchased in Lone Rock, Wisconsin. They were successful in raising hogs and Robert also bought and sold farm equipment for Handy Implement.
In 1978 Robert and Ardeth moved to Terry where they have resided since. In addition to their children they are survived by 3 grandsons: Robert Charles (Amanda) Johnson of Spearfish, SD; Brian Paul Johnson -Gainesville, GA; Damon Robert (Christine) Jeske, Coolidge, AZ and 8 great grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister Hannah Ball and one brother Virgil (Waneeta) Farris of Forsyth, Mt.
Preceding him in death were two brothers: Bill Johnson and Styrol Farris; 3 sisters-Edith Breekon, Verlie Langemo and Ruby Kron. His parents John Wesley Johnson, Elizabeth Bowling Johnson Farris and stepfather Loyd Farris. 
Robert enjoyed playing pranks on his family and friends. His smile, laugh and lighthearted nature will be missed by all.
Cremation has taken place and his ashes will be interned at the Ismay, MT cemetery. A memorial is being planned for family and friends to gather in celebration of Robert’s life. The memorial will be held in Terry this summer. Date and time will be announced at a later time.
