As elementary students load up on needed school supplies and high schoolers prepare to register for classes Thursday, Aug. 18 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the high school office, both signal one thing - the start of a new school year.
Students will be welcomed back to Terry Public Schools Wednesday, August 24.
For students in kindergarten through fifth grade, classes will begin at 8:25 a.m. and end at 3:25 p.m. Sixth grade through high school classes begin at 8:12 a.m. and end at 3:33 p.m.
Bus routes remain the same and students will continue to be dropped off and picked up at school on Towne Avenue west of the Grandey building.
Students are encouraged to arrive on the school grounds no earlier than 8:10 a.m., unless they are planning to take part in the school breakfast program, which begins a little earlier, according to Terry Schools Superintendent Casey Klasna.
Returning elementary and junior high students do not need to pre-register for school. New students and high schoolers are asked to come in Thursday, Aug. 18 to register when school counselor Lisa Kuehn will be on hand to help students plan class schedules.
“(New students) are welcome to come in anytime,” Klasna said. Although Thursday is when Kuehn will be available, new students can come in anytime before August 24 to register.
School enrollment in May ended with 141 students. With 14 seniors graduating from the class of 2011 and only five kindergartners entering school this fall, school officials were initial expecting a drop in enrollment numbers. But the arrival of several new families changed that expectation.
“It looks like our numbers are going to be a little higher than they were last year,” Klasna said.
A Thursday afternoon motivational assembly is planned for students.
