John Blakely, 72 of Harvey, ND died Tuesday, February 12, 2019 at the Bethany Retirement Living Center in Fargo. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18 at the Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey. Burial will be in Sunnyside Cemetery, Harvey, ND. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

John was born January 7, 1947 in Billings, Montana. He was the son of George and Bertha (Bollinger) Blakely. He grew up in Montana, California and Oregon. John graduated from Terry High School in Terry, Montana in 1967. He married Jeanette Gaub in September 1967. John was drafted into the Army in 1967 and attended boot camp in Washington. He served one full year in Vietnam. John trained and became certified to work as a mechanic on the CH-47 Chinook helicopter. He served stateside in Savannah, GA for another year before being honorably discharged in 1970. John returned to Montana where he was a mechanic at a Ford dealership in Terry, Montana, then worked a few years in Miles City, and again returned to Terry, where he worked as a lead mechanic at Varner & Dockstader Auto Shop until he moved to Harvey, ND in 1991 following his divorce. John worked at Tom’s Home Furnishings, Schulz Engine Repair, Farmers Union, and proudly operated Johnny’s Shop in Harvey.

John is survived by his children, Jerel (Debra) Blakely, Aurora, CO, Janel (Charlie) Bassett, West River, Maryland, Jeline (Michelle) Blakely, Tacoma, WA, Joshua (Amber) Blakely, Miles City, MT, eight grandchildren; his brother, George Blakely of Terry, MT, and nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Elaine Kyriss.
