John Morris Colness of Terry, Mt. passed away in his sleep at Riverstone Hospice in Billings, MT on February 27, 2019 at the age of 77. He was a diabetic most of his life which led to a liver ailment.

Funeral services will be held in Terry at the Sacred Heart Church on March 21 at 11 a.m. Officiating will be Father Francis.

John was born in Bismarck, N. D. on June 13, 1941 to Anne and John Colness Sr. He was their only son, he had for older sisters and one sister younger than him.

He attended St. Mary’s grade school and high school, graduating in 1958.

Being an avid sportsman, he and his Dad loved fishing and listening to sports on the radio when they couldn’t see them on TV.

His huge collection of books proved he was an avid reader!

He chose to be a teacher so he went to Teacher’s College in Valley City, N.D. He taught English and History in Minnesota and in N.D. The most years were in Williston Jr. High before the big oil boom.

Having taught in Terry for a time, he would spend summer months there, so he decided to move to Terry when he retired.

He was an antique collector and avid follower of auctions, which led to him have some antiques.

He never married but his mother and sisters kept in close contact. After his father and mother died, he considered his oldest sister Norma Guttenbert of Glasgow the “Head of the family”!

He enjoyed many nieces and nephews, loving to tell stories and keep them supplied with Cracker Jacks and oranges, says his niece Linda. Paul remembers fishing Apple Creek in N. D. Josh looked forward to mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Terry to receive Holy Communion.

This Spring or Summer the Guttenberg’s in Glasgow plan on having a Memorial service at home for family and out-of-state relatives, weather permitting.
